AU Background:
Ayaka is the archetype of Shirou Emiya, the main protagonist of Fate / stay night. Her background is a lot different from Shirou’s, starting from the fact that, even though she is now orphaned, she comes from a line of magi leading her to be more adapted to the lifestyle. She doesn’t appear to have a strong will to be a hero like Shirou, mainly because she didn’t have anyone in her life like Kiritsugu until Saber came along.
Eight years before Fate / prototype, Ayaka’s sister Manaka was the master of Saber. It was obvious that their father had bigger expatiations for Manaka rather than his other daughter. Manaka and Saber managed to defeat the other six servants and her father thought he was helping them guide towards the Root they failed to gain, but it was obvious that Manaka had other plans in mind. Manaka decided that wishes and such were boring and that she would use the Grail for its true purpose – to raise the Beast. She gathered female sacrifices for it and it was apparent that Ayaka would be one of them after Manaka sacrificed their father while Ayaka was left in fear until her sister found her. Her servant, Saber, would save Ayaka, killing Manaka and throwing her corpse in the Grail ending that Grail War.
“The countdown to my death sentence reached zero.”
Eight years later, on the anniversary of her father and sister’s deaths, Ayaka would participate in the Holy Grail War. The morning of that day, she was not able to complete her father’s order (more than likely to summon a servant) to kill one of the pigeons to use its blood, so in the end she had to use her own. During her visit to her family’s grave, she is approached by Sancraid Phahn, the local priest, who wonders why she has not made any preparations for the war. When she tells him that she does not want anything to do with the grail, he gives her the news that she cannot run or hide.
Ayaka barricades her door, screaming that she couldn’t do what her sister could do. She is then pursued by Lancer, putting up a good fight until she tries to barricade the door using her ability to control plants. He tries to kill her but this just leads to her summoning Saber as she awakens her status as a master. Her new servant destroys Lancer’s spear, causing him to retreat. Thus begins this adaption’s Grail War.
Over time, Ayaka and Saber would form a rivalry / allyship with Lancer and his master, Misaya, acting more like friends than enemies in a war (such as having tea with them), and Ayaka would fall in love with her servant seeing him as the ideal prince she always wanted. She would also catch the attention of Archer, who interrupts her love confession to Saber and demands that she becomes his queen. Ayaka refuses, angry that Archer interrupted something very important to her. During the course of the war, Manaka and Sancraid Phahn corrupt Saber, taking Ayaka’s command seals. Lancer, who had recently lost Misaya, contracts with Ayaka so they could get Misaya and Saber back.
Personality:
“In my own self assessment, my character is the worst".
Ayaka Sajyou is, arguably, very different from her counterpart Shirou Emiya. She displays a lot of insecurity in herself and her abilities, because her father had higher expectations for her sister, she believes that she cannot do anything extraordinary in her life since she is a mediocre mage compared to her genius sister. She deems herself as average in a negative way, since to her father being average was not good enough for him.
For the most part, she distances herself away from others unless something interests her, but due to living alone for the past eight years she’s lived in a very solitude lifestyle. Her school life is relatively unknown but it’s safe to say she doesn’t have many friends because of her quiet and seemingly cold behavior, and of course the trauma she went through during the previous war. In all honesty, Saber was probably the only person Ayaka trusted.
Ayaka does not trust people, fearing that they’ll betray her like her sister did. It takes a lot of conversing and opening up from the other person to make her actually trust a person. It was easy for Saber to gain her trust quickly because he saved her life, an action that she cannot forget. If it wasn’t for him, she would probably be dead. Once a person has her trust, she’ll want to protect them.
Cute comments about her embarrass her and cause her to blush and get angry a bit, mainly because she thinks they’re being dumb; it’s a typical tsundere trait she has and Saber has seen this side a lot, mainly because he teases and pokes fun at her. The tsundere side isn’t shown much unless someone she knows well makes a teasing comment at her. For the most part, she’s a bit blank from hiding her trauma within her. Showing emotions will just cause trouble and she doesn’t want any more in her life, and the fact that she can be rather stubborn also plays an important factor. Only Saber has seen other sides of her, mainly because she has a crush on him and deems him as her perfect prince. She would do anything for him, and when he’s taken from her she’s determine to win him back even if it kills her.
Because of the trauma of the war, she has a lot of trouble killing, as she does not want to be seen a monster like her sister. That being said, she’s not afraid to defend herself if she needs to. She was able to hold a good fight against Lancer with her old-styled magic. Even so, Ayaka deems herself as a coward because she cannot kill, and she stated that she would just run away from the war. Unlike Shirou, she does not wish to be a hero, and in the beginning would choose to run away from the war (though when Saber is taken, she decides to fight to get him back). She knows she can’t be as powerful or brave as her sister, though this is not true because she’s survived the war so far. Once again, she deems herself as an average, cowardly person.
For some reason, she seems to have an attachment to crows. That may be because her magic is centered on bullet-like black feathers. She cannot kill an animal since she has trouble killing, as seen when she tries to complete her father’s mandatory ritual that she must do every morning by killing a pigeon.
Her glasses play an important role in her personality. When she has them on, her hair is a darker shade of brown and her eyes are more of a dark blue, and her personality is a bit shy, cowardly, etc. However, when she takes her glasses off her hair and eyes change a lighter shade and so does her personality – this personality shows her as a bold young girl who won’t take anything from anyone, a woman who means business. Basically, while she was already strong she becomes a stronger person.
Her relationship with Misaya and Lancer is funny. She and Misaya aren’t friends but they can tolerate each other to an extent. Ayaka used to fear people like Misaya but now that the war made her a stronger person mentally, she isn’t so afraid anymore. She feels sorry for Lancer after he loses Misaya and due to similar situations (Her losing Saber) they form a contract with each other. Her relationship with Lancer isn’t explored, but it’s safe to say she’s still a bit upset about him trying to kill her, but she does trust him; most of the type, anyway. She hates Archer with a passion, mainly because he treats her as a prize and wants to marry her when he defeats Saber, and he interrupted her confession to Saber.
The current war certainly has made her a brave person, and she refuses to run away any longer. While she still said that she can’t do anything and that even if some of her insecurity is still there, she chooses to fight for Saber and her allies and the fact that she chooses to do so gives her some hope that she can make it out alive.
Abilities:
Ayaka’s abilities aren’t explored much in the OVA, but there is still information that can be expanded on.
Observations lead to her practicing an older type of magic, one not used by mages of this day as noted by Lancer. She generally practices black magic / Witchcraft at the beginning, so it’s assumed by Type-Moon standards that she can curse people. She is capable of creating and using dark crow feathers as darts that are seen to be powerful such as killing Misaya’s dog familiars, even causing a powerful servant such as Lancer to guard against them.
She is also capable of controlling plants, making them grow and barricade entrances. It’s unsure what else she can do with the plants, but it’s safe to assume she can use them to do anything as long as she has some control over them, thus using this to her advantage.
As a suggestion by her servant Saber, she started using Formalcraft, an ancient system of thaumaturgy that compensates for lack of power and the weakness of the caster through the use of rituals, sacrifices, and magic circles, usually used by weaker magi like herself. This has not really been expanded on, and Ayaka refers to it as “thaumaturgy for dummies”. It allows the conversion of elements (Fire, Earth, Water, Wind and Ether).
Sample Entry: Dear_mun sample here!
Her chest was hurting and slowly she lifted her hand to it, resting it on the place where her command seal for Saber once was. How could she let this happen to him? To be easily swift away by a mad, inhuman priest – someone who she thought had some sense of humanity left. She was wrong; she was so stupid to let her guard down like that.
Saber trusted her, trusted her to be able to defend herself against something like this. She failed as always. It shouldn’t surprise her but they were so close to finding the truth, to winning the war. Ayaka could have been a great magus—
No. How stupid of her to even think that. It was Manaka who was the greater one out of the two, the one who made her father proud. Not Ayaka; never Ayaka. She was such a fool for even believing she could be like her sister. Her fingers curled into a fist and she felt tears form in her eyes.
No. She couldn’t give up. The young girl’s fingers curled around the cool temple of her glasses, taking them off of her face. She decided what to do. She couldn't give up now, not when they were so far. Closing her eyes and opening them once more, one could note that the shade of her eyes changed – not just in colour but the mood of them changed. No longer were they sad; they were filled with anger and determination.
“Lancer,” she calls for her substitute servant and once she grabs his attention, she turns her head to him.
“We’re going to get Saber back. I can’t do much, but I’m not going to let that priest or my sister win. They will be defeated and I will get Saber back!”
Could she even do this? She wasn’t thinking right now, and she may regret this later. However, now wasn’t the time for thinking; now was the time to take back what was rightfully her’s.
“Mark my words, I won’t run away any longer! Even someone like me can fight if I choose to do so!”
